Writers LIVE: Lawrence Hill, The Illegal: A Novel

Thursday, January 28 at 7:00pm

Wright Theater, University of Baltimore 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave., Baltimore MD 21201

The Illegal is the gripping story of Keita Ali, a refugee -- like the many in today's headlines -- compelled to leave his homeland.

Like every young boy in Zantoroland, a fictionalized country, all Keita Ali has ever wanted to do is to run. Running means respect and riches; his country turns out the very best runners on earth. But when Keita's family is targeted for his father's outspoken political views, Keita is forced to seek refuge in the wealthy nation of Freedom State, a country engaged in a crackdown on all undocumented people. There Keita becomes a part of the new underground and learns what it means to live as an illegal.

Lawrence Hill is the Commonwealth Award-winning author of Someone Knows My Name, republished as The Book of Negroes for the television miniseries. A graduate of the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University, he lives in Ontario, Canada.
