AFRO American Newspaper:
The Black Press Movement was a pivotal force in the African American community, providing a vital platform for news, advocacy, and cultural expression. As a central figure in this movement, the Afro-American newspaper played a significant role in shaping the narrative of Black Americans and driving the civil rights struggle. "My Brilliance Shines" Theater Troupe will tell the story of John and Martha Murphy's purchase of the AFRO American Newspaper in 1897 and the impact of Black journalists like Moses Newsome.
Gloria Richardson & The Jet Cover:
Gloria Richardson, a prominent civil rights activist, was featured on the cover of Jet magazine in 1963. This iconic image captured her resolute spirit and became a symbol of Black power and resistance. The cover photograph, taken during a protest in Cambridge, Maryland, shows Richardson standing defiantly in front of a line of police officers. Her determined expression and unwavering stance conveyed a message of strength and defiance in the face of racial injustice. "My Brilliance Shines" Theater Troupe will take the audience on a journey through Richardson's famous stand against the police in Cambridge, while exploring how her appearance on the cover of Jet elevated her to a national figure; solidifying her position as a leader of the civil rights movement. Gloria Richardson's story, along with the powerful image, inspired countless others to join the struggle for racial justice.
