This goal of this 8-session course is to develop the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in American Sign Language. As an introductory level course that establishes a novice range of communication skills, this course emphasizes the acquisition of vocabulary and interactional skills using basic grammatical features. Topics of study will also include historical events that have impacted the language and culture of the deaf community and cultural practices distinct to those who approach the world from a visual perspective.
