About this Event
400 Cathedral Street, Baltimore, MD 21201
The iconic Baltimore salt box dates back as early as 1969. Created by the Baltimore City Department of Transportation, the bright yellow wooden boxes are strategically placed and filled with salt to help Baltimoreans treat streets and sidewalks in the snow and ice. In 2017, the Baltimore icon got its own social media account thanks to resident Robert Atkinson. In December 2020, some salt boxes started to get makeovers after local artist Juliet Ames noticed a box with no letters on it. She used ceramic dishes to create letters, and an art movement was born. Dozens of other artists have now added their creativity to salt boxes around the city. The humble but now iconic landmark now has its own zine and has made headlines all over the country.
This exhibit showcases a photo collection of salt boxes across the city that is now available onĀ Digital Maryland.
