In honor of the 2022 One Book Baltimore selection, Furia, join Creative Alliance's Artesanas to celebrate Latinx culture!

Corn is a staple food and common crop throughout the Americas. ‘Totomoxtle’  or the leaf of the corn is also known as ‘Tomoite’ and ‘Totomoitli’ and are not only valued for their use in traditional art, but are recognized for their valuable medicinal properties and often used as animal feed.

Throughout history, corn husk has been used in a variety of traditional crafts as a versatile material that can be dyed, shaped, and transformed into beautiful works of art such as flower bouquets, dolls, earrings, angels or wreaths. “Flores de Totomoxtle,” as they are called in some indigenous Mesoamerican cultures, have long been made to celebrate special holidays.
