Lost and Found:

Join us today for a discussion regarding films that capture two singular but very different time periods and that were both in danger of being lost to time for political and archival reasons.

  • DAWSON CITY: FROZEN TIME (2017)
This documentary tells the story of the 1978 discovery of 533 reels of film that depict the town of Dawson City at the beginning of the 20th century throughout the silent film era. This rare archival footage would have been lost forever had not a bulldozer uncovered the reels while digging up a parking lot. The film won Most Innovative Documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards and Best Editing at the IDA Documentary Awards. Click here to watch the trailer.

  • THIS IS NOT A FILM (2011)
Filmmaker Jafar Panahi depicts his life under threat from the Iranian government to create a documentary of his life in exile that was ultimately smuggled out of the country on a flash drive hidden inside a cake. The film was nominated by the New York Critics Circle Award for Best Non-fiction Film and won Best Experimental Film at the National Society of Film Critics Awards. Click here to watch the trailer.
