July 31 Film Friday: Life Imitating Art
Today we discuss two films that examine how art influences and echoes the lives of ordinary people.

  • MUSEUM HOURS (2013)
In English and German with English subtitles
Director Jem Cohen’s engaging tale of a museum guard and an out-of-towner who find refuge in Vienna's grand Kunsthistorisches Art Museum has been called “the Before Sunrise for a very different (and platonic) pair of individuals" (Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune). As their chance encounter sparks a deepening connection that draws them through the halls of the museum and the streets of the city, the film leads viewers to consider art’s effect on the human spirit.  Cassavetes Award winner at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Nominated for a SXGlobal Award at the SXSW Film Festival. Click here to watch the trailer.
  • THE MILL AND THE CROSS (2011)
In English, Flemish and Spanish with English subtitles
Visionary director Lech Majewski creates a brilliantly complex and fascinating multi-layered “movie within a painting” that melds art, history, and religion with the quotidian joys and struggles of ordinary people. Based on Michael Francis Gibson’s book The Mill and the Cross, this Polish-Swedish co-production focuses on a dozen of the 500 characters depicted in Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1564 painting "The Procession to Calvary," which is in Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Art Museum. While the painting depicts the historical suffering of Christ, the film is set amidst the religious persecution of 16th century Flanders. It stars Rutger Hauer as the painter Pieter Bruegel, Michael York as his banker patron and Charlotte Rampling as the Virgin Mary. Click here to watch the trailer.
