Writers LIVE! Beth Macy

Beth Macy, author of the bestselling Dopesick, returns to document the opioid crisis, which has seen addiction rates reach record-breaking numbers during the COVID pandemic.  Ms. Macy reports on the families, activists, and harm reductionists, who are working to address the growing issue and bring pharmaceutical companies to account for their culpability.  Beth Macy will be joined in conversation by Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health vice dean for public health practice and community engagement.

Beth Macy is an award-winning journalist and the author of several books, including Dopesick that was adapted into Hulu’s Peabody Award-winning series.

Dr. Joshua Sharfstein is the vice dean for public health practice and community engagement as well as a professor of the practice in health policy and management at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a former health commissioner of Baltimore, principal deputy commissioner of the U.S. FDA, and health secretary of Maryland.
