Akil Kumarasamy will discuss her debut novel that is set in the near future and follows a young woman who works in artificial intelligence. She becomes enmeshed in a manuscript she is translating from the late 1990s that recounts the efforts of a group of female medical students that were working during a time of drought and military conflict. The unnamed protagonist, shifting between the past and present, begins to question her own sense of suffering and compassion.
Akil Kumarasamy is the author of the story collection, Half Gods, winner of the Bard Fiction Prize and the Story Prize Spotlight Award. She is a professor in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Rutgers University-Newark.
